Free American Accent Practice: A 10 Minute Daily Routine

Drills, word lists and free tests you can use before you ever book a class.

Ten focused minutes a day beat an hour on Sunday. This routine runs in the same order an accent class does: your ear first, then stress, then rhythm, then your own free speech. All you need is your phone's voice recorder and a quiet corner.

The 10 minute routine

MinutesWhat you doWhy
0 to 2Read five minimal pairs slowly, then fastTrains your ear and mouth on one contrast at a time
2 to 4Say ten work words, pressing the stressed syllableStress is what makes you understood
4 to 7Shadow 30 seconds of an American speaker, three timesCopies rhythm, linking and pitch together
7 to 9Record a one minute answer about your day or your jobShows what you do when you are not concentrating
9 to 10Listen back and note one sound to fix tomorrowOne fix at a time sticks; five do not

A longer version, with weekly targets: daily American English practice routine.

Minimal pairs to say out loud

Each pair differs by one sound. If a friend cannot tell which word you said, that sound is on your list.

V and W

vest / west, vine / wine, veil / whale, vet / wet

TH and T

three / tree, thank / tank, thin / tin, both / boat

TH and D

they / day, then / den, though / dough

Short and long I

ship / sheep, live / leave, sit / seat, fill / feel

Short and long U

full / fool, pull / pool, look / Luke

A and E

bad / bed, man / men, sat / set, pan / pen

Sentences that test everything at once

  • "Very well, we will review the three videos on Thursday."
  • "I'd rather work on the report later, around four thirty."
  • "Thirty three thousand people attended the meeting in Seattle."
  • "Could you get back to me with the updated invoice by Wednesday?"
  • "Water, butter, better, little: a lot of Ts turn into taps."
Record these once today and again in two weeks. Comparing two recordings of the same sentence is the most honest progress check there is.
